Megan McDermott’s Intellectual Post

1. Give some basic information about your studies and fields of interest.
I am a senior in the theatre dept. My focus is more towards performance and building props for a show. I have a passion for photography and history. A little known fact about me is that whenever I am stressed, I start researching the most random things I can think of.

2. Describe an exhibition that you liked or found impressive. Tell us why. Please provide a link to a website, if possible.
I really enjoyed an exhibition from the Denver Art Museum which were artwork from the Louvre. At that time, I was learning French culture and the French language so it was really exciting to see French art in person.–112700/exhibitionType–Past
3. Which books did you read of late (art, fiction, non-fiction)? Pick one and go into detail about it.
I recently read “The Secret Holocaust Diaries” which is a non-fiction book with many journal entries from the perspective of a Russian girl who had to live as a prisoner through the horror of the Holocaust. She then wrote everything down in many different languages. After her death, her husband then published her book so that others can read about her life.
4. What are your main interests besides art?
I think art is in all of my main interests. I love creating, building, learning. I love theatre, photography, painting, and lots of other things that really show my artistic side.
5. Which blogs do you check regularly?
I do not really read blogs so this would be my first real blog that I will be checking regularly.
6. Which cultural event has really impressed you lately? This can be a museum, a concert, or anything like that, but also a sports game (if you consider this a cultural event for which there are good reasons). Or anything I am not even thinking of … Again, tell us why.
I am really impressed or I guess interested in the “zombie crawls” that now happen. It seems more of an American thing. Many people show up to these events in full costume and make up in specific characters or types of zombies which I love to watch their creativity boom each year. The number of people in the recent “Zombie Crawl” was over 500,000.
7. Please describe briefly an article in a newspaper or a magazine that got you thinking lately. Reading online is fine, and what you introduce here does not have to be about art. If the respective article is available online, please link to it!
I have heard about the Italian cruise ship. At first, the news reporters compared this disaster to the Titanic but now, it is suggested that the Captain was somehow at fault and tried to save himself over other people. Just really interesting to watch as this plays out and we get more information about it.
8. Please share with us a thought or an idea that really widened your intellectual horizon. Again, this must not be limited to the visual arts. If possible, give a source for this idea so that others know where to go to if they are interested.
An idea that really widens my “intellectual horizon” would be my personal motivation to be better at something than what I am at the moment.
9. Have you been to the Denver Art Museum, MCA Denver and BMoca Boulder? Describe one art object or a show you remember seeing.
I have been to the Denver Art Museum before and really enjoyed it. It was years ago but I really loved looking at the French revolution furniture, shoes and paintings that people took great care to make.
