Intellectual Profile: Cian Delahunty

1. Give some basic information about your studies and fields of interest.  I am a Studio Art major with a focus on drawing and painting, I also have another major in International Affairs with a focus in economics and the Middle East.

2. Describe an exhibition that you liked or found impressive. Tell us why. Please provide a link to a website, if possible.  Last semester one of the BFA candidates named Preston Cram in my class put on a show here.  His work is monochromatic illustrations with very dark and often cluttered imagery.  I don’t have a link but I was impressed by their scale and high level of gruesome detail.  My favorite piece was from a series he made where he created a dense field of angry streaks and then incorporated dark and realistic imagery hidden within the confines of the abstract setting.

3. Which books did you read of late (art, fiction, non-fiction)? Pick one and go into detail about it.  I read A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin.  I really liked it, but I read it after watching the HBO series so I knew what was going to happen but I still thought it was really well written.  It’s not the kind of book that will ever become an intellectual classic, but it has a large array of interesting and well developed characters and is fast paced and unpredictable.  It is set in a fantasy world and is mostly a story about the power struggle between two very powerful families and the story is a web of lies, deceit and murder that eventually devolves into war at a time when outside threats to the realm will require the strength of a united kingdom to deal with.

4.  What are your main interests besides art?  I like music, and playing drums.  I am also interested in politics and international affairs, hence my second major, where I am learning Arabic.  I also like video games.

5. Which blogs do you check regularly? I don’t.

6. Which cultural event has really impressed you lately? This can be a museum, a concert, or anything like that, but also a sports game (if you consider this a cultural event for which there are good reasons). Or anything I am not even thinking of … Again, tell us why.  I went to tour de fat in Fort Collins last year.  I am from Fort Collins but I had never been to it before.  It is a huge bike parade run by the New Belgium brewery and is designed to celebrate bicycles which is a big theme for them because their most prominent beer is Fat Tire and has a bike on the label.  The parade itself is a massive group of thousands of bicyclists, most of whom are dressed up in ridiculous costumes and ride around the city for a couple of hours, and afterwords there is a festival with music and entertainment but the parade is the most impressive part.

7. Please describe briefly an article in a newspaper or a magazine that got you thinking lately. Reading online is fine, and what you introduce here does not have to be about art. If the respective article is available online, please link to it!  http://www.npr.org/2012/01/19/145416791/so-um-what-is-a-private-equity-firm This is a description of the Bain Capital and similar private equity firms and what they do.  It’s not very definitive or argumentative at all considering its from NPR but it does shed some light on a subject that most people would only know about by watching highly polarized political adds and debates.

8. Please share with us a thought or an idea that really widened your intellectual horizon. Again, this must not be limited to the visual arts. If possible, give a source for this idea so that others know where to go to if they are interested.

9. Have you been to the Denver Art Museum, MCA Denver and BMoca Boulder? Describe one art object or a show you remember seeing.  I haven’t been there for a very long time.

If you haven’t done so yet, please upload a portrait of yours that will appear next to your future posts so that we all know who is speaking. You can upload an image if you go to your profile under users.
