Annie Davis’ Intellectual Profile

1. Give some basic information about your studies and fields of interest.

I am entering the first semester of my junior year and a Studio Arts major. My focus is printmaking and I am taking Intaglio 2 and Screen Printing this semester. I am currently just focusing on my art studies but am highly considering seeking out a second major of a minor.

2. Describe an exhibition that you liked or found impressive. Tell us why. Please provide a link to a website, if possible.

I recently visited the Clifford Still Art Museum (before enrolling in this class) and enjoyed not only seeing works of art, but also fragments from the artist’s life. My favorite part of the museum was reading the letters Still wrote to other artists and institutions. It was also great to see his works up close to understand how much texture there is in his paintings. The museum is entirely an exhibit of his life and I feel it’s a great way to celebrate the life of an incredible artist.

3. Which books did you read of late (art, fiction, non-fiction)? Pick one and go into detail about it.

I am currently reading a book titled Black Holes and Time Warps: Einstein’s Outrageous Legacy by Kip S. Thorne. Astronomical studies are a passion of mine and I enjoy learning about the most complex theories of space. This book goes into detail about all things black holes, from how they are created, how they function, and what happens to surrounding objects. I love learning about something that challenges all notions we believe about physics.

4. What are your main interests besides art?

I am an avid skier and go as much as I can. I also love to sew and cook. Academically, I am interested in astronomical and French studies.

5. Which blogs do you check regularly?

I am not much of a blogger, but I like to occasionally look at the Free People blog and a blog called Honestly… WTF. They have beautiful pictures of clothing, DIY ideas and other random pictures.

6. Which cultural event has really impressed you lately? This can be a museum, a concert, or anything like that, but also a sports game (if you consider this a cultural event for which there are good reasons). Or anything I am not even thinking of … Again, tell us why.

I recently went to the Denver Aquarium and absolutely loved seeing all of the animals. It’s always so interesting to observe species different than ours and think of how we all came from a similar background. I do always feel terrible for the fish and tigers that are captivated there, but it is a sort of museum of species that helps educate us.

7. Please describe briefly an article in a newspaper or a magazine that got you thinking lately. Reading online is fine, and what you introduce here does not have to be about art. If the respective article is available online, please link to it!

I hope this does not come off as wrong, but seeing the young Dakota Fanning on the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine stirred mixed feelings within. It makes me think how much our society is changing. Now that she is 18, it seems alright that she is on the cover of an adult magazine. I feel uneasy about this and think that it might make younger girls push forward with their sexuality at too early of an age. I do not think Cosmopolitan should have featured someone so young on their cover and could have stuck with their typical age category, which is from the 20’s to 40’s.

8. Please share with us a thought or an idea that really widened your intellectual horizon. Again, this must not be limited to the visual arts. If possible, give a source for this idea so that others know where to go to if they are interested.

I constantly tell myself “no one is invincible”. Hearing and witnessing the deaths of friends, family and strangers really puts me in my place. We need to strive for the highest bars we wish to attain. After leaving school due to the death of my father, I considered dropping out. However, a mentor showed me how lucky I am that I have the ability to go to college and do what I desire. I am thankful every day for what I have and am entirely aware of what is missing.

9. Have you been to the Denver Art Museum, MCA Denver and BMoca Boulder? Describe one art object or a show you remember seeing.

I have been to the Denver Art Museum and BMoCA. My freshman year, I visited the Urban Chicken Coop Projects at BMoCA. It opened my eyes to more abstract exhibitions that can be art and awareness. It was great to see alternative methods of locality.
