Ryan Baker Intellectual Profile

1. My name is Ryan Baker, and i am majoring in Studio Art with an Emphasis on photography and am minoring in EBio.  I am currently applying to the News-Editorial Journalism program, and i want to become a photo-journalist.  My passion is photography and using to capture a moment in time portraying a persons life story.  I love engaging in conversation with different types of people., asking them about life and finding out what they do and what they have done, and taking a photo of them to capture their story.  I have always loved photography and am always pursuing my passion to capture life and everything it offers.

2. An exhibition that i loved was actually the collection of paintings by Clyfford Still at his museum in Denver.  I went to the museum for this class and didn’t expect to be impacted in such a great way by his work.  His paintings expressed the color field movement which were made to invoke feelings in the viewer and to really incorporate the viewer in his work.  I found myself staring at these ten foot paintings for twenty minutes and taking there beauty.  The texture and color applied to them with such force made me overwhelmed with feelings of happiness, excitement, and grief.  I could feel the presence of Still in his paintings.  The museum was an art piece in its own because everything about it was made purely for his paintings, and allowed Still work to flow and be presented in the best way possible.

3. Lately my favorite book that i read is called Kon Tiki.  It is a true story about a group of explorers who decided to prove that South Americans settled in Polynesia in  Pre-Columbian times.  They proved that the natives sailed on balsa wood rafts over 4,300 miles to the Polynesian islands.  This is an amazing book about a mans determination to prove his research was right when everybody doubted him.

4. Besides Photography, my interests are rock climbing, snowboarding, surfing, and skateboarding.

5. The only blogs that i regularly check is an insane music blog called http://www.etmusiquepourtous.com/, and a surfing blog, http://www.marinelayerproductions.com/.

6. A cultural event that has really impressed me lately was the U.S. Open of Surfing which happened this past summer.  I have always gone to this event because of the insane surfing that takes place every year, and also because it attracts thousands of people every year.  It is really interesting to see the different kinds of people that show up at this event.  It offers not only surfing, but skateboarding and motocross, as well as a lot of booths with free stuff, and a free concert by MGMT.  It was really cool to see these people come together to support surfing which is a growing sport without the recognition it deserves.

7. An article that I read lately that really got me thinking was an article on the Atlantic about the wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship off Isola del Giglio, Italy.  The cruise ship hit a reef and sunk just hours after taking off, and the passengers had not been briefed on any safety procedures in case this happened.  There are eleven confirmed dead and still 21 remain missing.  The captain, Francesco Schettino, is being accused with multiple manslaughter, and endangerment because he abandoned ship before making sure all of the crew and passengers were off the ship safely.  This really shocked me because it is something that could have been easily avoided but the captain was careless while steering the ship.

8. One thing that has really widened my intellectual horizon is basic idea that anything is possible when you put your mind, heart, and soul towards it.  Through a personal experience, i have realized that life is short and we need to make the best of it, and treat every day as if it is our last!

9. At the Denver art museum, i remember an exhibit of electronic art from last year which was amazing.  On piece i distinctively remember was in a dark room with 35 T.V. lying screen up on the floor with audio from war movies playing.  As the audio played, different colors would flash from the televisions and created a very dark and ominous feeling about the media and its involvement in the war.

One Response

  1. I’ve had a few friends in News Editorial classes pursuing their love for photography and just wanted to give you a heads up that the required classes involve a lot of writing. That may seem obvious, but most of those friends were a bit disillusioned by the amount of writing. I also have been to the U.S. Open of Surfing a handful of times and definitely agree with the interesting crowd and the growing support for surfing. I like that you chose it as your recent cultural experience because I don’t think enough people would.
