intellectual profile: Madeline Dungan

1. Give some basic information about your studies and fields of interest.

  • My name is Madeline and I’m a psychology major. My current interest is in clinical psychology. I’m originally from Chicago, Illinois, but I love Boulder because it’s nice being so close to the mountains.

2. Describe an exhibition that you liked or found impressive. Tell us why. Please provide a link to a website, if possible.

  • This winter break I visited the Chicago Art Institute and really liked my great grandfather, Patrick Lannan’s, donation of modern and contemporary art. My favorite artist was Gerhard Richter especially the paintings “Woman Descending the Staircase” and “Christa and Wolfie”. I like how they looked realistic, almost like a photograph, and had some sort of movement.

3. Which books did you read of late (art, fiction, non-fiction)? Pick one and go into detail about it.

  • The most recent book I read was, Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Bronte. It took place in the 19th century, a time where it was believe feminity meant a woman should be passive, submissive, and dependent on men. Jane Eyre was the opposite of this because she was determined to find what she wanted and proved to be a strong, independent woman.

4. What are your main interests besides art?

  • My main interests besides art are music, cooking, and history. Music has been in my life since I was very young, and I can play the piano pretty well. Now of days though, I don’t play as much music as I do go to concerts and try and discover new artists, but needless to say classic rock will always be my favorite. I’ve just recently started cooking and find something about making my own food therapeutic. I’m not sure how good my food tastes to other people, but I know with time it will get better. History is probably my greatest passion though because I think it’s very important to learn and know about the past to benefit the future.

5. Which blogs do you check regularly?

  • A blog I look at pretty regularly is foodporndaily. I wish I could try everything that’s posted.

6. Which cultural event has really impressed you lately? This can be a museum, a concert, or anything like that, but also a sports game (if you consider this a cultural event for which there are good reasons). Or anything I am not even thinking of … Again, tell us why.

  • The last cultural event that really impressed me was visiting the Chicago History Museum just a few weeks ago. I had never been there before, but have lived in Chicago almost my whole life. It was interesting being able to see how Chicago has progressed and grown. It had great exhibits about Abraham Lincoln and the Chicago Fire. I also really liked the sports section showing the wins, losses, and highlights of the Bulls, Bears, and Blackhawks.

7. Please describe briefly an article in a newspaper or a magazine that got you thinking lately. Reading online is fine, and what you introduce here does not have to be about art. If the respective article is available online, please link to it!

  • An article that I recently read that had me thinking was called, “What is it about 20-Somethings?” posted in the New York Times. It was about the fact that it is taking young people longer than ever to grow up. The average age for marriage and self-reliance has increased a lot. I found this interesting because I believe it shows how the economy has really taken a toll on everyone.

8. Please share with us a thought or an idea that really widened your intellectual horizon. Again, this must not be limited to the visual arts. If possible, give a source for this idea so that others know where to go to if they are interested.

  • An idea that has widened my intellectual horizon is the idea that love is socially constructed. The decision of whom to love feels like one of the most personal, independent decisions, but in reality it is influenced heavily by factors that are beyond our control such as society, our families, and the media. This idea has always been interesting to me because it makes me think about how much, or how little, free- will we actually have.

9. Have you been to the Denver Art Museum, MCA Denver and BMoca Boulder? Describe one art object or a show you remember seeing.

  • I have not been to any of those places and am really looking forward to going to the Denver Art Museum this weekend.
