Brittany Hill Intellectual Profile

  1. Give some basic information about your studies and fields of interest.

Im currently a junior studying studio arts, with an emphasis in drawing. Although drawing is my preferred medium, taking digital art classes here at CU has definitely inspired me to explore other mediums like sound, video, photoshop ect.

  1. Describe an exhibition that you liked or found impressive. Tell us why. Please provide a link to a website, if possible.

At the Smith Klein Gallery, they exhibit the artist Mike Shankman (mikeshankman.com). I always visit this gallery, just to look at his work. It features pretty traditional oil paintings, but the way he approaches urban landscapes is really stunning. Also being able to see them in person, you can examine the thick texture of the paint that you can’t see in digital reproductions.

  1. Which books did you read of late (art, fiction, non-fiction)? Pick one and go into detail about it.

Lately I read The Curse of the Good girl by Rachel Simmons. It discusses her how our society is diminishing girls’ success by forcing them to conform to the typical “good girl”. They are pressured to be completely selfless, polite, and modest, and it stunts their ability to become independent, confident women. I think I’m often too nice, staying quiet when in reality something is really bothering me, so I thought the book had a very empowering message.

  1. What are your main interests besides art?

One of my absolute favorite things to do is to eat! I spend way too much money going out to dinner on Pearl Street and trying new food, and I love giving people restaurant recommendations. My top 3 picks would have to be The Med, Brasserie Ten Ten, and Falafel King. But staying in and cooking dinner with a bunch of my friends is also really fun!

  1. Which blogs do you check regularly?

I’ve never gotten too into blogs. Thoughtcatalog.com can have some entertaining articles, and I’m addicted to reddit.com.

  1. Which cultural event has really impressed you lately? This can be a museum, a concert, or anything like that, but also a sports game (if you consider this a cultural event for which there are good reasons). Or anything I am not even thinking of … Again, tell us why.

I’ve personally never gotten into the electronic/dubstep music scene that has seemed to take over Boulder. But recently I saw Savoy at the Fillmore, since I had a bunch of friends that were going. Seeing them perform live gave me a whole new respect for the genre, and made me appreciate why people are so in love with the music’s energy.

7. Please describe briefly an article in a newspaper or a magazine that got you thinking lately. Reading online is fine, and what you introduce here does not have to be about art. If the respective article is available online, please link to it!

  1. Please share with us a thought or an idea that really widened your intellectual horizon. Again, this must not be limited to the visual arts. If possible, give a source for this idea so that others know where to go to if they are interested.

This is a tough question…the first thing that comes to mind is just how everyday experiences and interactions with different people constantly change how I view the world; how one comment can make you take a second look at the way you used to see something.

  1. Have you been to the Denver Art Museum, MCA Denver and BMoca Boulder? Describe one art object or a show you remember seeing.

Yes, I’ve visited all of them. Like many others, I found the installation Fox Games, by Sandy Skoglund to be very intriguing. I had learned about her work before in my art classes, but seeing her work in person is completely different. The frozen moment in time with the bold color creates a surreal space that engulfs you.
