El Anatsui, Ryan Shand, Extra Credit Post

Today in class our quiz question was based on the artist El Anatsui, so I thought it would be good to further research his life and career. For most of his career is lived in Nigeria, although he was originally born in Anyako (a town in Ghana), where he worked as a professor and worked mainly with the medium of clay and wood. Through these materials he created different sculptural objects that helped transform his passion in instillation art. In Nigeria he worked with many natural, earthy materials (such as cloths) that he would weave together into large, fallen, organic forms. He is originally known for being a “Ghana Sculpture”, which means that he creates sculptures in a country that is located in West Africa. Now that he is a widely known artist, he travels the US places his work in front of a western audience. He has taken part in two main exhibitions: Magiciens de la Terre, 1989 and Documenta 11, 2002, which we have both discussed in class lecture and learned in our readings.
