More American Photographs

In the past, people used painting, drawing, and sculpture to record stuff, such like portrait, landscape, or the history event. Yet, after developed the camera, photography replace the function of those, it became the material for people to record. The photography shows the importance in the art history, because the photography is not just showing the reality things like News, or recording the history event, it can used for other purpose. Sometimes it is not just what the image show; it can become words for the artist. It can represent what the artist’s opinion and things they wants to say or want the audience to feel. Visiting Artist – Lawrence Argent

On Wednesday, April 18, Lawrence Argent has a speech at the lower level of Denver art museum. He is a very funny person, and if you do not know him, you should know about his work. If you ever drive in downtown Denver passing the Denver Convention Center, there is a huge sculpture looking in the window of the building, a blue bear. This sculpture was making by him, and this public artwork named “I see what you mean.” It is representing the Colorado, what we think when we hear the state of Colorado. From his opinion, the bear can represent Colorado well, and both can show the audience the feeling of nature.  When the audiences see the blue bear form the outside of the building, people will have question about what this bear doing here, or something like what the bear is looking at. Yet, when the audience walk into the building see the bear from inside, the bear is facing the audience that makes the audience feels that the bear is watching or hunting them. When I first hear about Abstract Expressionism, I thought we are going to study the artist such like Pablo Picasso, but now I know I am completely wrong about the meaning of abstract expressionism after the read the assignment and visited the museum. This is an explanation for the abstract expressionism “A post World War II movement in painting characterized by emphasis on the artist’s spontaneous and self-expressive application of paint in creating a nonrepresentational composition.” This movement is first American movement that achieves to influence the whole world and make New York City the center of the western art, so it is the most important movement in American art history. The article ”  What is Contemporary Art?,” explain Smith’s idea and thought of contemporary art. There are many different way to explain what is the Contemporary art, but from Smith’s perspective, Contemporary art is  culture that matter to itself.
