What is Contemporary art

Terry Smith’s article “What is Contemporary Art?” first suggests the importance of asking and investigating the articles very title, what is contemporary art?  Smith begins many of his own conceptions be prefacing them with the leading ideas of other scholars. This mode of inquiry is very sturdy and provides a rich exploration of what contemporary art is discussed as, in contrast to Smith’s personal claims of what he sees contemporary art as. Smith reveals one of the most popular approaches to understanding contemporary art that is to view it as ‘post historical.’ The very word contemporary describes time rather than the work itself, such as the case with for example abstract expressionism. Since time is specifically referenced in the word contemporary it would follow that the art being categorized is perpetually new and can therefore never become historical. This among other reasons Smith points out is what makes the study and articulation of contemporary art so challenging. A second problem with the artwork itself is its broad production worldwide, many people are making diverse works which cannot be categorized together under any sort of genre title. Smith provides one idea that it is perhaps this accessibility and widespread production of images which are unclassifiable that might later categorize the art of out generation in the future.

Smith describes contemporary art to be something that is all its own. It is self defined and can be found in all areas of culture. Smith sees it as a movement that is beyond history, taking place in the 1990’s where he considers history to “end”. As a result, contemporary art has become its own culture in today’s world.

Terri Smith’s writing “What is Contemporary Art?” prods deep into the different perspectives concerning what the recent category of art is and will become. The first perspective explained is that the art form is classified as being art historical, with a return and embracement of styles of the past. This also ties in with the post historical idea, insisting that the past, specifically Modernism, is the ultimate guide to the work of Contemporary artists. Periodlessness is introduced, being both extremely troubling to some and a relief to others. This thought consists of an end to any artistic period, instead resulting in the end of any original art to be reflected on in the future. Smith, as well as others introduced in the writing, is concerned that artists of today are driven merely on attention and self-promotion than leaving a mark on art history, and could perhaps result in such an ending. Peter Timms explains a “trickster effect,” one which involves artists acting as elitists that look down on those who question the motives or validity of their art.

Terry Smith’s “What Is Contemporary Art?”

In Terry Smith’s view, there is a concrete answer to the question “What is contemporary art,” and contemporary art’s definability is a result of a contemporaneous art historicism which marks the birth and development of current art trends in such a way as to identify the ideas, objects and practices of contemporary artists and how these art aspects interact with one another. The answer to the book’s title, when boiled down, is that contemporary art is the reflexive, distinctive structures of stasis and change in the institutionalized and globalized economic culture of  current art. Smith applies her precise (if sometimes exhaustive) rhetoric to the question of defining contemporary art, suggesting that contemporary art may be classified as the sum of three currents of art production. The first is the aesthetic of globalization, the second is post-colonialist world diversity, and the third is the quantitative increase in young artists practicing today.

In an attempt to define contemporary art’s unifying style, Terry Smith discusses the the distinction between modern and contemporary art, bringing to light the ideological differences that make contemporary art such a unique phenomena in the history of world art. Terry Smith asserts in her article that art is international, and contemporary art is a result of the social and historical forces that were important at the time of making the work. Despite the wide spread of international artists, all share the common influence of modern day society in a globalized world. Modern and contemporary art is not a unified movement of aesthetics, but rather a conglomerate of shock tactics and new mediums. After the rise and fall of movements such as minimalism and conceptualism, the modern movement would be the first to bring about an era of periodlessness, where no defining “house style” would be prevalent. Smith attributes this shift to the changing face of society that has come to usher in an era of an abundance of visual stimulation, an era that emphasizes grandiose spectacles and celebrities, resulting in an art movement that is disorganized and obsessed with the idea of advancing ones own name through mainstream popularity.

In “What is Contemporary Art” Smith works to define the distinction of “contemporary” and further analyze the relationship between work considered contemporary art and the globalization effect that art has gained within modern society. Smith does this by initially defining contemporary art empirically in terms of chronology.  From this smith then explores the concept that perhaps contemporary art occupies the niche of art removed from time. Raising the question at which point contemporary works cease to be contemporary works and become history? This is a unique view as this highlights an ambiguity within the taxonomy of art; in which the ability for work to thoroughly and historically be evaluated is diminished. As not enough time has passed to objectively look at social and political events which parallel a work. From a historical standpoint this ambiguity furthers the question to what extent is contemporary art timeless or removed from time?

Contemporary art poses many questions and concerns. It is difficult to understand and to label because we are currently in the midst of it. We probably won’t be able to fully understand the art of our time until we have enough distance from it that we can put it into perspective with regards to other art movements. Art, historically, has always been categorized into specific niches or “-isms.” Contemporary Art is constantly changing, and art critics and viewers are constantly changing their perspectives according to their environment. Ms. Smith spends the majority of her article discussing the definitions of contemporary art as well as a number of ideas about why it has proven so hard to define. Some critics, observers, and even artists themselves feel that we have reached a time when periodization has been rendered arbitrary, if not impossible. This is a far cry from the past wherein the history of art was organized into tidy categories (impressionism, post-impressionism, neo-classicism, etc.). This is the result of a number of causes, most importantly an enormous amount of variety within contemporary art in style, medium, and objective, moreso than any other time period in the history of art. Then there are the critics who find contemporary art as a whole so baffling and/or trivial they believe it doesn’t even deserve a place next to the more refined art of the past. All of this makes for a jumbled collection of artists and ideas strung together merely by their contemporaneity.

In simple terms, Terry Smith addresses the debate of defining contemporary art. He asserts that it is so difficult to define because it is current. Past periods of artistic production have been categorized by titles, themes, -isms; for example, Classical art, Renaissance art, Expressionism, or Modernism. Smith states “that the present cannot be grasped until it becomes, in some sense, a past” (page 253) and describes the difficulties of categorizing the wealth of contemporary art while we are still within this period. To my understanding, the most unifying idea amongst contemporary art is the idea of being in the present, our relationship with time, and how fleeting that is. Contemporary art is feared to be “periodlessness” and perhaps not categorizable like art movements of the past, but I agree with the notion that is seems premature and overwhelmingly difficult to look historically at something that isn’t history: the present.

Smith does not assign Contemporary Art an overarching definition, but rather branches it out into loose sub genres. As he haphazardly links them into a web of scholarly pretense and gibberish, he succeeds in obscuring any clarity that once existed about the genre. He defines Contemporary Art at one point as “self-defining,” as if it’s not already assumed that a culture’s art represents itself inherently. Labeling an artistic movement as a phenomenon that is “constantly inviting itself to its own self-representation” is disregarding art as a constantly evolving entity, a direct product of the human artist, who will never be perfect. Yet it is not Smith’s word-choice which makes his entry so artificial, but rather it is his inability to recognize art as a product of humanity. He nonchalantly calls Contemporary Art a restless genre, helpless against the undulations of high society and culture, while ignoring the plethora of past movements that have fluctuated just as wildly. He writes this entry as if art is some origin-less species that we must observe behind a thick panel of glass, like visitors at a zoo. It is the person behind the artwork who matters, so of course art will never be uniform! What person is exactly the same as another? We are all unique, thus an artistic movement is subject to unpredictable and drastic changes.

The Smith article begins not with an attempt at describing contemporary art itself, but with an explanation of its place and importance within modern culture and society.  It exists within several important economic industries worldwide, such as tourism and education as well as being a industry unto itself with an intended audience both within and outside of highly educated esoteric circles.  Smith describes the immediate roots of the contemporary art period as being the end of the 1970’s and 80’s when an overall (or set of overall) directions for art seemed to dissipate and leave art in the hands of a small elite who seemed to cater only to themselves, inflating art prices and declaring their cultural superiority in doing so.  Contemporary art, smith argues, is the revival of from this when artists appealed both to the masses and elite by appealing to common interests outside the art community while attacking prior convoluted expectations thereby satisfying the art community’s lust for “questioning itself”.

It is an intense, expansionist, proliferating global subculture, with its own values and discourse, communicative network, heroes, heroines, and renegades, professional organizations, defining events, meetings and monuments, markets and museums-in sum, distinctive structures of stasis and change.” It continues by saying that Contemporary art is a culture and has a globalizing character but it also mobilizes nationalities and localisms in specific and complex ways. Contemporary art is primarily visual, and is driven by image, spectacle, attraction, celebrity, symbolic exchanges between people, interest groups and cultures that takes mainly visual forms. The qualities that make it different from other art is the novelty, unfamiliarity, rarity and so on, that it contains.

Due to the heavy influence from the media, art is now becoming timeless, meaning a certain historical artwork does not have to be in its certain time period to be understood. Smith points out that the term contemporary art wasn’t really used until the 1990’s. Also Smith points out how the “institutional network” of contemporary art is a global one. Really the label of contemporary isn’t really used to describe art made here and now, but art that could be aged; early in the article he states that contemporary art is “out of time” rather than with time (which is the real definition of art). One of the most interesting things about the article is when Smith describes the Trickster Effect that occurs in contemporary art institutions, and how contemporary art can seem to have a genuine message, but really one that falls within institutions only concerned with making money and gaining a reputation.

Smith’s piece What Is Contemporary Art? circles around the ambiguity of contemporary art and the difficulty one encounters when trying to define it.  While there are many things that contribute to this dilemma, Smith eventually narrows it down to four primary issues.  The first is the fact that there seems to be more contemporary art than before.  With such an abundance of art, it becomes difficult to satisfactorily constrain all of these works into an overarching theme.  The second is that contemporary art is more decisive than before.  This comes in many forms, ranging from content to medium to location, explaining that there does not seem to be a unifying theme or practice.  Where past movements may have kept to a particular style or subject matter, that does not seem to be the case with contemporary art, making it ever the more harder to pin down.  The third explains that contemporary art is being created all over the world, which causes a problem for those who view a particular piece of contemporary art from another country.  Much of art draws from cultural backgrounds and therefore there may be certain boundaries that impede one’s understanding of a particular work of art.  The fourth  issue is that art is being generated by younger artists and exhibited more quickly than ever.  This creates a problem because new works are constantly being churned out.  Once someone believes they may have an idea of what ‘contemporary art’ is, a newly emerging piece may radically alter that perception.  Furthermore, with artists becoming younger and younger, it only allows the artist population to continue to grow, therefore exponentially increasing the amount of contemporary art available, all of which must be considered to define ‘contemporary art’.

Smith views “contemporary art” as a global culture that is constantly changing and growing, and also uses it as a general term used for the art that is being created at the present time. Many critics however, see contemporary art as being created outside of time, as it is constantly shifting making it “periodless” Smith notes that people have always labeled era’s of art by their style (ex: the impressionist, cubists, surrealists etc.) and due to contemporary art’s many and constantly in-flux styles an “ism” has not been appropriated to contemporary works, causing art historians to question what exactly this body of work is. Smith then goes on to explain other critic’s definitions of contemporary art, and why these definitions are either to narrow or just not correct. Contemporary art, as Terry Smith demonstrates in this excerpt of “What is Contemporary Art?”, is difficult to define. He finds this art period, if one can refer to today’s art as a movement at all, in a state of constant flux that makes generalizing the emerging global art community entirely impossible. This is an issue for art historians, artists, curators, and admirers alike — if contemporary art escapes definition, or remains a self-defining concept, then what is the next step? Smith’s logic points to a strange truth, no definition of a movement then makes the movement infinite, such that there are no new ideas that emerge, since one cannot distinguish any self-defined work from another contemporary work. The emergence of mass media, aided by technology, gives contemporary artists new tools to exemplify their ideas, mainly through what Smith refers to as the “iconomy”, a new language of imagery that perpetuates all media, thus becoming relevant to any aspect of the new human condition. Where contemporary art falls short however, is the myth of the spectacle. Artists feel forced, as following a modernist perspective, to sell themselves short by appealing to a global audience that feeds on celebrity and scandal which is viewed through an increasingly short attention span. The views on contemporary art, as Smith demonstrates, then become extremely polarized.

In this essay, Terry Smith describes a lot of what contemporary art is not. He says that it is not a traditional movement like those that we are used to, nor is it completely a specific point in time. It is not a certain style or pattern, and it is not the aesthetic of a particular culture. He then makes a lot of interesting points that get the reader closer to the definition of contemporary art. Contemporary art, he states, acknowledges the present, the here and now, and the non lasting idea of the here and now. Contemporary art is being generated all over the world in many different ways, and is not tied specifically to one culture or another. Smith begins defining “Contemporary Art” as the mode in which art is presented not only to its audience but concurrent art forms within an institutionalized network. It is integrally linked to mass cultural industries and the constantly changing society in which it is manifested. The “scene” of contemporary art in itself defines current art production. The concept of contemporary art is a general term for today’s art taken as a significant whole–separated from modern art by the postmodern period. During the end of the 20th century art became defined as a surpassing history. The use of -isms fell out of fashion as nothing followed minimalism and conceptualism; potentially contemporary could become defined as “periodlessness.” This leads Smith to question whether there will ever be another predominant style in art.

In Terry Smith’s article, “What is Contemporary Art?”,  contemporary art is portrayed as a relatively new, complex form of expression that is subject to consistent change and recognizes the present, not as a defined time period, but as being in a state of flux.  It attempts to capture the history—religion, politics, economics, pop culture– of the present before it disappears.  It reacts to the time at hand and makes strides towards progress.  It is art constructed by and for the world, and does not simply capture local or international values, but rather the multitude of various networks and relationships found between them.  Contemporary art serves as a means for trendsetting, and is a force in a cultural agenda.  It follows the post-modern era of art; its origins often recognized after the Second World War.  It uses touches of previously defined artistic practices in order to promote new, unique self-definition and self-representation.

The article “What is Contemporary Art?” by Terry Smith discusses what the meaning of contemporary art really is.  Contemporary Art isn’t s specific movement within art history and many people struggle to define it or do not know exactly what it is.  According tot Smith contemporary Art is a culture and a trendsetting force.  It can be viewed as a “scene” within society.  Contemporary art can be defined as whatever we deem it is.  It is art that is current and relevant in our culture and society right now.  It has a lot to do with happenings and current movements occurring throughout the world.

The Terry Smith article presented many definitions for the artistic style known as contemporary art. In his article he presents a few justifications of the contemporary art movement, but somewhere reinforced in-between the brief talk of the 70’s 80’s modernism, post modernism is a simple explanation of contemporary art that really hit the spot for me. Smith presents four different defining characteristics, the first criterion signifies that it is art that has been produced since the 1980s. Other publications claim that contemporary art can be art that has been created since WWII as well.

There are many variations of meanings of what Contemporary Art is.  Contemporary Art the way today’s art is viewed by many different people and cultures throughout the world.  The main concept of this form of art is used to mean today’s art.  It is different from modern art.  With today’s art, a lot of the time, people are open to interpret it in their own way.  It also may be generated from ideas of art from previous time periods.  During the 1990s and around 2000 it became a popular idea that Contemporary Art  was art beyond history or art that came after the end of history.  Contemporary Art not only can mean art after the end of history, but also timeless art.  It could mean that art from here on out is constantly in the present with no past or future.
